New Delhi: After an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale struck China’s Southern Xinjiang province on Monday night, there were strong vibrations felt in the Delhi-National Capital province.
The earthquake happened 80 kilometers below the surface.
The National Center for Seismology reported, “Earthquake of Magnitude:7.2, Occurred on 22-01-2024, 23:39:11 IST, Lat: 40.96 & Long: 78.30, Depth: 80 Km, Location: Southern Xinjiang, China.”
The same earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 was registered by Kazakhstan’s emergency ministry, according to news agency Reuters.
The largest city in Kazakhstan, Almaty, saw residents flee their homes and congregate outside in spite of the cold; some were even clad in pajamas and slippers.
An earthquake with a higher magnitude of 4.4 shook Andaman and Nicobar island earlier on Saturday. The earthquake occurred on January 20, at about seven in the morning.
“An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck Andaman and Nicobar island on January 20, 2024, at 07:06:19 IST. Its location was given as Lat: 9.97 & Long: 93.54, depth: 11 km,” according to NCS.
