Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways sobs in court, saying it’s better to die in jail

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained Naresh Goyal in September of last year in connection with a purported ₹538 crore Canara Bank fraud.

Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, sobbed in court on Saturday, declaring that he had “lost every hope of life” and that it would be preferable for him to pass away in prison than to continue living in this condition.

Goyal, 74, told the court he missed his wife Anita, who has terminal cancer, after being detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September of last year on suspicion of defrauding the Canara Bank out of ₹538 crore. PTI reported on this development.

Goyal claimed in court documents that his health is extremely unstable and poor. Currently, the founder of Jet Airways is being held in judicial custody at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. Goyal stated that their sole daughter is ill and that his wife is bedridden.

“I listened to him carefully and watched him as he made the appropriate contributions. I discovered that he was trembling all over. According to the court documents, the judge stated, “He needs assistance even to stand.”

The ED had raided Naresh Goyal and his associates on July 20 of last year. The raids came about as a result of a formal complaint filed by Canara Bank with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which named him, his wife Anita, former executive G Shetty, Jet Airways India Limited, and other unidentified public personnel as targets of the FIR.

Canara Bank said in the FIR that it granted the airline credit limits and loans totaling ₹848.86 crore, of which ₹538.62 crore are still unpaid. The report states that on July 29, 2021, the account was deemed to be a “fraud.”

The bank said that Jet Airways had diverted cash by paying “related companies” ₹1,410.41 crore out of the total commission expenses, as revealed by the forensic audit.
